Evernow’s Clinical Director shares Emily Hu shares facts on Menopause and Evernow’s approach to delivering healthcare based on science, innovation, and women’s lived experience with menopause.

At Evernow, about a third of women come to us in perimenopause. Menopause is actually just one day in a womans life! It is defined as 12 months of no periods (in women with a uterus). Perimenopause is the time leading up to menopause when symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats and irregular periods start happening. While many people know something about menopause, perimenopause, and how to manage it, can still be a bit of a mystery.

1. When people think of menopausal and perimenopausal symptoms, they tend to think of hot flashes and night sweats.  However, there are other common symptoms women experience such as brain fog, mood swings (including feeling more irritable), poor sleep, anxiety and depression. In our own research, these symptoms are more common in women going through perimenopause, than the traditional hot flashes and night sweats.

These are the actual signs that menopause is beginning:

  • 85% of women in perimenopause experience fatigue/low energy.

  • Nearly 80% experience sleep disruption, brain fog, or weight changes.

  • And most (>70%) report anxiety, depression, or mood swings.

2. Many women start perimenopause in their 40’s. Perimenopause and associated symptoms are happening to women when they are at the busiest time of their life! It’s happening when they are advancing their careers, raising their children, and caring for aging parents.

3. Irregular periods are a sign of perimenopause. It is common to have skipped periods , a shorter interval between periods and also heavier periods. Irregular periods can last for months and years before they actually go for 12 months with no periods, the definition of menopause (for women who have a uterus) .

4. If you are experiencing any of the above symptoms, you do not have to suffer! You should speak to a provider who can evaluate you and help you find relief. Treatment may include hormonal therapy and also non hormonal options.
